WHY WILD?

Wild vs. Farmed Foods

What Does “Wild” Really Mean?
You've probably seen the word wild on everything from berries and mushrooms to salmon.

But what does it actually mean?

At Northwest Wild Foods, wild means the food grows or lives naturally in its environment rather than being raised or cultivated specifically as a commercial crop or farmed product.

For us, it's more than a label.

It's part of where our company came from.

🌲 WILD FOODS BEGIN IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS
Wild berries grow naturally in forests, mountains and other native habitats.

Wild mushrooms emerge according to natural seasonal conditions.

Wild Alaskan seafood comes from naturally occurring fish and marine populations harvested under applicable regulations.

Because these foods come from nature, no two harvests are exactly alike.

🫐 WILD VS. CULTIVATED BERRIES

Wild
Grows naturally
Naturally occurring varieties
Often smaller or irregular
Seasonal harvest
Flavor can vary naturally

Cultivated
Grown commercially
Selected and cultivated varieties
Often bred for size and uniformity
Production can be more controlled
Flavor tends to be more consistent

Neither approach is automatically “better.”

They're simply different.

We love wild foods because they offer flavors and varieties that can be difficult to reproduce through conventional cultivation.

🍄 WILD VS CULTIVATED MUSHROOMS
Wild mushrooms grow according to natural environmental conditions.

Cultivated mushrooms are grown under controlled conditions.

That means wild mushrooms can offer:
• Seasonal availability
• Regional differences
• Distinctive varieties
• Natural variation Cultivated mushrooms offer:
• Predictable availability
• Consistent size
• Consistent production

We offer both because different mushrooms are suited to different purposes.

🐟 WHAT ABOUT WILD SEAFOOD?
Wild-caught seafood comes from naturally occurring fish populations.

Farmed seafood is raised in an aquaculture environment.

At Northwest Wild Foods, we're particularly proud of our selection of wild Alaskan seafood, including salmon and other wild-caught species.

Wild seafood is part of the Pacific Northwest food tradition that has inspired our company from the beginning.

🌎 WHY DOES WILD FOOD COST MORE SOMETIMES?

 Wild foods can require:
• Seasonal harvesting
• Specialized knowledge
• Remote harvesting locations
• Variable annual supply
• Careful handling
• Transportation from the harvest area

Availability isn't always predictable.

When you're buying a wild food, you're often paying for something that can't simply be produced on demand in a controlled environment.

❤️ WHY WE LOVE WILD FOODS
We don't believe wild foods need to be marketed as automatically superior to farmed foods.

We think their appeal is simpler:
They're different.
Different flavors.
Different varieties.
Different seasons.
Different places.
And sometimes, different experiences.

🏔️ THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST CONNECTION

Northwest Wild Foods began with a simple idea:
Bring the unique foods of the Northwest to people who couldn't easily find them.

Our wild berries and mushrooms connect us to the forests and mountains.

Our seafood connects us to the cold waters of the Pacific.

And our customers allow us to share those flavors far beyond the Northwest.

⭐ THE BOTTOM LINE
Wild isn't a marketing gimmick.

It's a description of where a food comes from.

We think that's worth knowing. And we think it's worth tasting.

🏔️ FROM THE WILD TO YOUR TABLE

The Northwest Wild Foods story Every package of berries, mushrooms or seafood has a story.

It starts somewhere in nature—often in a place far removed from the grocery store. Our job is to help bring that food from its source to your kitchen while maintaining the quality and character that made you want to try it in the first place.

 ________________________________________
🌲 STEP 1 — IT STARTS IN NATURE
Wild berries grow in mountain forests. Wild mushrooms appear when the conditions are right. Wild seafood comes from cold northern waters. These foods aren't made according to a factory schedule. Nature sets the schedule.

 ________________________________________
🫐 STEP 2 — THE HARVEST

Wild foods are harvested during their natural seasons. For berries and mushrooms, harvest timing can depend heavily on weather and growing conditions. For seafood, availability depends on fishing seasons, regulations and the annual catch. That's one reason you'll sometimes see a product available and then temporarily unavailable. Wild food doesn't always follow a calendar.

🔎 STEP 3 — SELECTION

Once harvested, foods need to be handled carefully. Quality matters. The products that make it into your order should meet our standards for appearance, quality and suitability for the product being sold.

 ________________________________________
❄️ STEP 4 — PRESERVING THE SEASON

One of the most important things we can do with seasonal foods is preserve them at their best. Freezing allows berries and other foods to be enjoyed well beyond their natural harvest season. Individual quick freezing can also make it easier for customers to use only what they need.

📦 STEP 5 — PACKING YOUR ORDER

Frozen foods require special handling. Your order is packed appropriately for its journey, including dry ice for applicable frozen products. Our goal is simple: Get your food from us to you in excellent condition.

🚚 STEP 6 — THE JOURNEY TO YOUR DOOR

Your box leaves Burlington, Washington and begins its journey to your kitchen. Depending on the product and destination, perishable products are shipped using expedited services. When your order arrives, follow the product and shipping instructions and get frozen products into your freezer promptly.

🍳 STEP 7 — YOUR KITCHEN

This is where the story becomes yours. Maybe your huckleberries become a pie. Maybe your chanterelles become dinner. Maybe your wild salmon becomes the centerpiece of a family meal. Or maybe you simply eat a handful of berries straight from the freezer. There isn't one right way to enjoy wild foods.
